The Canadian government has announced the launch of a large-scale package of retaliatory measures aimed at products manufactured in the United States. This step came after US President Donald Trump confirmed that his administration was imposing new duties on Canada and Mexico. At the first stage, it is planned to introduce 25% duties on American exports with a total value of approximately 30 billion Canadian dollars (about $20.6 billion). These measures will take effect at 12:01 p.m. New York time if the United States does not cancel its duties, Trudeau said. The next stage provides for the introduction of tariffs in the same amount, which will affect products worth 125 billion Canadian dollars. These additional measures will take effect three weeks later. The restrictions will apply to such categories of goods as cars, trucks, as well as steel and aluminum products. Trudeau noted that Canada's actions will continue until the American side abandons its protectionist measures. If the U.S. continues to impose tariffs, the Canadian government intends to work with the provinces and territories on the possibility of using additional non-tariff instruments.
