Europe vs USA: technology and industry at the center of trade disputes

The United States remains dependent on European technologies and resources, which makes these areas an important argument in trade negotiations. This was stated by Peter Leibinger, head of the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI). According to him, the European Union should use its strengths with confidence. America relies heavily on Europe, and this will continue.

He noted that each new-generation chip is manufactured using European EUV microlithography machines. In addition, about 70% of precision parts manufactured in the United States are made on German or European machines. He also highlighted Germany's key role in the production of touch sensors used in oil refining and pharmaceuticals.

Leibinger called for using duties only as a last resort, continuing negotiations. In his opinion, Europe should not seek to replace the US market, but rather seek a balance. Commenting on Donald Trump's actions, he stressed their spontaneous nature, but noted that they were part of a broader strategy of reindustrialization and eliminating the trade deficit. Leibinger compared Trump's approach to a game of checkers, where the logic becomes clear later, and called on Europe to adapt to this style.
